What to wear to 'big school' induction...

Last week saw my son's grammar school induction - the first chance for parents and the boys to meet teachers and fellow pupils. The parents got the talk about child protection and curriculum while the boys got to do some fun activities in their house groups and eat sweets.

What's a girl to wear I wondered? This will be my new school gate - albeit one I'll not see that often as he will make his own way there and home on the bus. I wanted to look respectable but not look like I'd tried too hard. On trend without looking scruffy. A regular dilemma for a work at home mum.

I decided on my trusty Maison Scotch skinny jeans - a bit distressed but not torn. Paired with my Clarks strappy sandals that have enough of a heel to feel smart but are low enough to walk easily in. The top half was a bit harder. It was a gorgeous sunny day so my New Look navy jersey jacket felt a bit dark...but I liked the rest of the outfit.

White Lace Top - New Look (size 12)
Distressed Skinny Jeans - Maison Scotch (years old - size 29)
Tan Strappy Wedge Sandals - Clarks
Tan Cross Body Bag - Fat Face
Necklace - From my shop last year (I have one of these left but it's not showing in the shop. If anyone would like it just message me)

Co-indidentally, that day I'd returned some jeans to New Look (they're fast becoming my favourite high street shop - I've bought so much there in the past few months) and while I was in, I spotted the navy jersey jacket in a nude shade and had brought it home to try on, unsure if the colour was a good one for me. Well, this was the perfect excuse to give it a first wear and I felt it worked much better than the navy....
Blush Jersey Jacket - New Look (size 12)

This white top needs a mention of it's own. It's also from New Look and a great example of the kind of gems you can find there. It's got a broderie-style lace front - 100% cotton, with a stretchy jersey back and a jersey underlay on the lace top, so it's not see-through. With a cute button detail at the neck, it's a steal at that price. Here's a few photos without the jacket.

Blush Loafers - Seven Boot Lane

As always with these occasions, once we were there, it didn't matter what I was wearing - it was all about taking in lots of information and making sure my son felt happy about his new school and how things would work come September. Lots to process but it's going to be a great place for him and I know he will settle in so well.

Hope you have a good week and that there's some sunshine wherever you are.

  3. Looks perfect, Avril. The pink blush jacket is gorgeous. I really must give New Look another go but I've always been disappointed with the quality. Lynne xx

  4. Bought the New Look top due to your recommendation. Wearing it out tonight and thrilled with it. Looks more expensive then it was. Thanks! (Wish it came in other colours, navy would be fab)
